Pressing Triggers 6v6
DefendingU13–U14Difficulty 4/5
18 minutes · 12–14 · 50 × 35 yards · Opposed
Objective
- Press together, on a signal everyone recognises
Set-up and how it runs
- 6v6 with keepers, and a marked pressing line thirty yards from each goal.
- Name the triggers before you start: a backwards pass, a heavy touch, a player receiving with their back to goal.
- When a trigger happens, the whole defending team presses; between triggers they hold their shape.
- Winning the ball inside the opponents' pressing line and scoring within eight seconds is worth double.
- Five-minute games, and stop play twice per game to freeze the picture.

- Bibs
- Balls
Coaching points
- The nearest player presses the ball; everyone else presses the next pass
- Press from the outside in — force them towards the touchline
- If the trigger has gone, drop and rebuild — a lone presser is a hole
- Communicate the trigger out loud: 'press!'
Progressions
- Only one trigger allowed, so it must be recognised precisely
- Reduce the eight seconds to six
- Remove the pressing line and let them judge the distance
